MULTIPLE MYELOMA
What is Multiple Myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is a type of bone marrow cancer caused by an abnormal increase in white blood cells called plasma cells. The Bone Marrow is the space between some bones where blood cells are made.
It commonly presents with bone pain, symptoms of anemia (like tiredness and shortness of breath), kidney problems, weak bones that may break with minimal force, high levels of calcium that may cause confusion, increased thirst, and urination.
SYMPTOMS
Constipation
Mental changes, including confusion
CAUSES
Largely unknown
Exposure to radiation and viral infections, e.g., HIV, is thought to increase the risk of getting Myeloma.
TREATMENT
Treatment includes medication for pain, to reduce calcium levels, to strengthen bones, dialysis if needed, and chemotherapy to reduce the cancer cells.
