ANEMIA
What is Anemia?
Anemia is when the body does not have enough red blood cells, leading to reduced haemoglobin levels. Red Blood cells carry oxygen to different organs of the body.
Some people may be born with abnormalities like Fanconi Anemia; others may have an acquired bone marrow failure syndrome like Aplastic Anemia, where the bone marrow fails to produce blood cells. Aplastic anemia can be caused by autoimmune diseases, viral infections, or medication, but in most cases, no cause has been identified. Sometimes anemia is part of another disease, such as Thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, or autoimmune hemolytic anemia (where the body destroys its own red cells)
SYMPTOMS
Tiredness
Weakness
Shortness of breath
CAUSES
Various factors can cause anemia. The most common cause is bleeding, but it can also be due to nutritional deficiencies of iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid. This complexity underscores the importance of understanding the condition.
TREATMENT
Treatment is targeted at the cause and may include nutritional supplements, stopping offending medications, blood transfusion, and medication to reverse hemolysis. A Bone Marrow transplant may treat conditions like Fanconi Anemia and Aplastic Anemia.
