LEUKEMIA

What is Leukemia?

Leukemia is a form of blood cancer. It can be Acute (rapid progression and aggressive) or Chronic (slow progression and less aggressive). It is classified according to the type of blood cell that is affected.

The common types are Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Acute Lymphoid Leukemia, and their Chronic counterparts. Leukemia can affect the white blood cells (most common), red blood cells, or Platelets.

It’s important to note that different types of Leukemia can affect different age groups. For instance, Acute Myeloid Leukemia is more prevalent in the older population, while Acute Lymphoid Leukemia is relatively more common in the younger population. However, with early detection and proper treatment, the impact of Leukemia can be significantly reduced, regardless of age.

SYMPTOMS

Feeling Tired

Frequent infections.

Bleeding, e.g., from gums, nose, and easy bruising

CAUSES

Most cases have no obvious cause. However, some cases can result from previous exposure to chemotherapy or radiation for an unrelated disease. Some genetic abnormalities may predispose people to develop Leukemia. Smoking and exposure to some occupational chemicals like benzene may cause Leukemia.

TREATMENT

When it comes to treatment, acute Leukemia requires immediate attention. Fortunately, there are effective modalities available, including Chemotherapy, radiation, and, in some cases, Bone Marrow Transplant. Chemotherapy can be administered through injections or tablets, providing a range of options for patients.
